I've been thinking a bit more about highway design and the differences between US and UK. Here in the UK, the junctions are much better laid out (and signposted). A Motorway-to-Motorway junction, for example, will usually have two lanes entering and exiting. And the outer one of these will sometimes go for almost half a mile before the final merge. This makes intersections both faster and safer.
