Well said. When I first visited Japan in 1982, I went with a typically loud and obnoxious American. I'm British and, while I didn't know in advance all of these customs, I did realize that politness and trying to fit in was good manners. My colleague was immediately disliked. In fact, I caught them openly laughing at him one time. I got invited to stay at someone's home for my last night. My colleague, of course, did not.
